Bigger and Better

Kelsey Boettcher -- Sept. 18, 2017

It's that time again! Apple is releasing a new model of the iPhone. As the iPhones go on over the years they have gotten bigger and better. The camera quality has gotten better. The size has even improved. When the first iPhone was released it was known as the “brick phone” with being a thick stubby phone. The iPhone had the same shape until the iPhone 5 when it became a slimmer longer model. From there the iPhone went to being the slimmest it ever has with the iPhone 6 and then when the iPhone 6+ was released it was known as the tablet phone with a huge screen. The screen size was bigger than the original iPhone 3’s entire size. With the look upgrades came other like price upgrades. The original price of the iPhone has almost doubled since 2006 and with the new iPhone X being released it was climax to $1000! Good luck apple we are all excited to see what else the iPhone X brings!

Donald Trump to Take Office

Alex Thomas -- Dec. 14, 2016

Donald Trump winning the presidency was a shock to all of the world, and especially the Hillary Clinton campaign. Early on in the night, Hillary was the clear favorite to win the presidency, and some polls gave her up to an 80 percent chance to win. However, as Trump started winning huge battleground states such as Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, the Clinton campaign and all of their supporters started to worry and break down into emotions. The night went on and Trump still had a demanding lead over Hillary, and people really started to get shocked and worried. The election ended with one of the biggest political upsets in  U.S. history, with Trump winning 276 to 218. Many believed that Hillary was going to demand a recount, but she decided not to. With Trump taking office in 2017, it serves a lot of concerns to address for him and his plans as president. The biggest concern for most Americans is if Trump is going to go through with his plans to build a wall. This also coincides with the immigrants’ concerns that most Americans have with Trump. Another huge concern with Trump is his approach to foreign affairs. Many people are very suspicious of Trump, and his relationship with Vladimir Putin the leader of Russia. The two biggest questions have to be if the American people going to give President Trump a fair chance, and how will Trump do in his first year as president with a dominantly Republican congress by his side.

A chartered plane that was carrying Chapecoense to one of the biggest games in the Brazilian soccer team’s history, crashed into a hillside in Columbia and killed 71 people. The official emergency management changed the first number of deaths to be 75, but it was lowered to 71. The pilot declared an emergency around 10 P.M because of an electrical failure. The Jose Maria Cordova airport sent out a tweet at approximately 12:22 A.M stating: “Confirmed, the aircraft with the registration CP2933 * transported the team @ChapecoenseReal. Apparently there are survivors.” The plane carried 68 passengers and nine crew members. Some survivors included Jackson Follman, Helio Hermito Zampier Neto and Alan Ruschel. Follman had to have his right leg amputated but Ruschel was in the most serious condition. The opposing team, Atletico Nacional, asked that the title be given to Chapecoense.

On Monday September 26, 2016, the first Presidential Debate took place. Everyone in America watched as Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton went head to head to prove to the American people why they are a better fit for President. Many people feel that Clinton proved she was better fit than Trump. After the first few minutes of the debate, Clinton began to push Trump’s buttons to show the people what kind of president he will really be. In fact, after the debate, some Republican figures gave their support to Clinton. However, some people still feel like Trump could have a chance if he prepares for the next debate. No one can tell, and we will just have to wait for the next debate to see.

The New iPhone 7

Alex Thomas - September 21, 2016

The newly released iPhone 7 is really impressive and fascinating. The entire phone is improved in many ways, including the new 12 megapixel camera. This is a big upgrade from the iPhone 6’s camera, which was only a 8mp camera. Apple also added the highly anticipated lightning port headphone jack to please their fans that are tired of the old headphone jack. This next upgrade might just be the best upgrade, and that is the new water-proofing of the device. Users will finally not have to worry about their phones being destroyed by water. The last big upgrade Apple made to the iPhone 7 is that it has a longer lasting battery than any other iPhone in history. Charging times have also been sped up. The release of the iPhone 7 was just like every iPhone release. It was huge all over the world, selling out in just minutes. Everybody wanted to get their hands on the new phone, and many people camped out at their local Apple stores, just so they can get the device the day it came out. Overall, the iPhone has a lasting effect on the customers, because it is an amazing phone that is loved by many.

New Additions to Maple Lawn

Alex Thomas - September 21, 2016

Maple Lawn is already filled with great and amazing stores, restaurants, and shops. Not only that, but they also have great people who live in the community. With all that said, the community still wants to improve by adding even more restaurants, giving the people of the community more options and variety when they do decide to go out and eat. Not only will it provide variety, it will provide people with their favorite places to eat that might not of been close enough for them to enjoy in the past. Overall, this is a fantastic move by the Maple Lawn community, and is sure to bring a positive outcome to the area. The first addition they decided to add is a new Chipotle, sure to be a favorite amongst the people. Not only does it appeal to the people who live close to the area it appeals to the people who commute back in forth each day through the area. Lastly, they will add a brand new sushi restaurant, once again a great move for the community, since there is not a restaurant that sells sushi close to the area. Not only that, but sushi is becoming more and more popular amongst the people, so this addition is sure to do just fine along with the rest of the new additions.

Meet the SMoB Candidates!

Brandon Mangum -- March 17, 2016

It’s almost that time of year where students have the opportunity to vote for Howard County Public School System’s Student Member of the Board. According to the Howard County Association of Student Councils website, “Each year, one student represents the student voice as a member on the Board of Education. Unlike other Maryland jurisdictions, the HCPSS grants the SMOB full status as a board member and can vote on all issues except issues pertaining to budget, personnel, or other restricted matters.” The Chomp, in order to help inform students about their choices for this year’s election (held May 11th), is bringing you a Q&A with both of this year’s SMOB candidates, Griffin Diven and Brooke Walker. Enjoy!

GRIFFIN DIVEN:
What caused you to run for the Student Member of the Board?
“What caused me to run for the SMOB position was that it has not been hard to notice the amount of disconnect in Howard County through different situations. But out of these tough times, the student voice has emerged more loud and proud than ever. However, while this is such a great thing for students to be speaking up in tense situations, I have heard of situations where students feel as they are being quieted down. Or they do not still feel confident enough to speak their voice. No matter the topic, every student should feel comfortable speaking their opinion no matter their race, gender, religion, or ethnicity. That is why I want to run for SMOB to ensure no matter who the person is that they have a voice.”

What prerequisites do you feel you have to run for the Student Member of the Board?

“Lately I have been able to gain so many opportunities that I think qualify me to run for SMOB. I recently co-founded the Wilde Lake Youth Politics Club where our mission statement is to create a safe environment for students of all backgrounds to discuss current political topics. Also, to spread awareness of social activism in the Wilde Lake community and hopefully other areas. I also am a part of ASP (Appalachia Service Project) where for a week each summer we go and rebuild houses in the heartlands of Appalachia. We do year long efforts of community service beforehand and the whole process teaches me so much about a person’s responsibility to help those around them. These two positions and many others have shaped me into a confident leader who wants to make sure everyone feels equal and committed to serving others.”

What do you feel you can/will do differently if elected as SMoB?

“If I am elected as SMOB what I would do is throughout my term never stop listening to the student voice. I will actively always seek out the student perspective on every issue. I would also work my hardest every day to try and make all of Howard County students from east and west feel like they have equal opportunities to always put their best foot forward and strive to succeed.”

BROOKE WALKER:

What caused you to run for the Student Member of the Board?

“I have been involved in my school’s SGA since I was in 6th grade, so I have known about it ever since then. I have always been interested in and thought that I would make a great advocate for the voice and opinions of students. I looked into it more and after many recent events, I decided to run for SMOB because I want to make a difference.”

What prerequisites do you feel you have to run for the Student Member of the Board?

“I am a very active member of our community in and out of school. I have participated in numerous leadership opportunities such as being apart of my school’s Student Leadership Cadre (SLC), Student Government (SGA), Delta Scholars, Varsity Track and Field, my Church Youth Group, and much more. I also have a lot of experience with speaking because of the many speeches I've given, including to the State Highway Administration in regards to my neighborhood.”

What do you feel you can/will do differently if elected as SMoB?

“There are many things that I would like to accomplish if elected as SMOB. One major thing is unity. I would like to be able to get the students more involved. I believe that as their voice, I need to listen to their opinions about the issues that go on in our school system because it is OUR school system. It is Our education that is impacted by the decisions of the board and I want to be their to make sure that the students best interest is there.”

New Hampshire Primaries

Brandon Mangum -- Feb. 11, 2016

The quest for the party nominations for President continued on with the New Hampshire Primary elections this past Tuesday. Both parties knew who was going to come away with the delegates for the state. As for second place and beyond… that’s a different story.

For the Republican side, Donald Trump held a huge lead in the polls before the primaries. That lead carried to the polls, as Trump had 35% of the vote, according to FOX News. As for the runner-ups, nobody could have seen what was coming. The runner-up of the New Hampshire primaries was John Kasich, who bounced back from an eighth place performance in Iowa with 16%. Iowa’s caucus winner, Ted Cruz, received a third place finish this week with 12% of the vote. In terms of percentages, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio were tied for fourth place with 11% of the vote. However, in terms of votes, Jeb Bush received fourth place with 31,310 votes, a little over a thousand more than Rubio.

The “saga” of Jim Gilmore continued in New Hampshire. In Iowa, Gilmore received 12 total votes. In New Hampshire, Gilmore received 133 votes, giving him a total of 145 votes. Dropping out of the race for POtUS was Carly Fiorina, who had received just 4% of the vote in New Hampshire. Also dropping out of the race was Chris Christie, who received 7% of the New Hampshire vote. In the announcement posted on his Facebook page, Christie said “And so today, I leave the race without an ounce of regret. I’m so proud of the campaign we ran, the people that ran it with me and all those who gave us their support and confidence along the way.”

As for the Democrats, it was obvious who would win. New Hampshire “felt the Bern,” even before heading to the polls. Bernie Sanders held a double digit lead against his rival, Hillary Clinton. That success transferred extremely well in the polls, with Sanders taking the state with 60% of the votes, or about 151,584 votes. For the Clinton side, she got 39% of the vote, or 95,252 votes.

For South Carolina, the Clinton campaign has something to look forward too. In the most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls, Clinton holds a 37 point lead against Bernie Sanders. As for the Republicans, Donald Trump holds a lead in the UMass Lowell/7News polls, with a 21 point lead against second place candidates Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, who both have 13 points. The South Carolina primaries will be held on Saturday February 20th.
